May 3rd, 2019 – support of Gay/Straight Alliances

For Immediate Release

We’re Together Ending Poverty (WTEP) believes that “to understand the root causes of poverty, we need to examine our society from many different perspectives, including but not limited to gender, race, class, ability, age and sexual orientation”.

We recognize that LBGTQ+ youth disproportionately experience poverty and homelessness. In many cases this is because those parents who are homophobic and transphobic expel their children from their homes or make life so difficult for them that youth are compelled to leave.

Therefore. WTEP salutes those students who will be walking out on Friday May 3, 2019 to protest Jason Kenny’s plans to give schools permission to out students in GSAs to their parents. GSAs were established as safe spaces for students exploring their gender identity and/or sexual orientation. They will not be safe if students can be outed to their parents. While many parents love their children and will support them, there are too many who do not.

It takes courage to resist oppression and speak truth to power. We can all learn from the students willing to take a stand this Friday.
